Entertainment Programme 2012
AN ECLECTIC MIX OF COUNTRY & CELTIC ENTERTAINMENT FOR NEW ZEALAND’S ONLY WHISKY THEMED FESTIVAL Gore’s Arts & Heritage Precinct will resonate to an eclectic mix of Country and Celtic flavoured music from a variety Australian and New Zealand guest artists on Saturday February 25th.
The themed cuisine from many southern restaurants represented at the 2012 Hokonui Moonshiners’ Festival will be complemented by a lively mix of familiar Country and Celtic flavoured songs from leading international recording artists. Included in this year’s line-up will be The Borderers from Adelaide, Warratahs’ popular front-man Barry Saunders, Jackie Bristow all the way from Austin Texas (with guitarist Mark Punch and the rest of ‘The Blue Moons’) plus Dunedin’s own Saddle Hillbillies.
All groups will alternate from 12 noon to 6pm and provide both lively and absorbing entertainment for festival goers on the day.
The Borderers
are a multi-award winning Scottish/Irish/Australian band that were formed in 1994 and have since recorded 8 albums. They are an energetic band; having toured the UK, USA and Canada.
The Borderers are also well known performers at many of the world’s top music festivals having played Byron Bay Blues & Roots, Port Fairy Folk, Edinburgh and Womad Festivals in Australia and the UK – as well as touring Canada and the USA. They’ve also supported artists including Tom Jones, The Proclaimers, The Chieftains and Shane McGowan from The Pogues.
Jackie Bristow
is a southern girl at heart. Born and bred in the South Island of New Zealand this Kiwi has found her wings.
Over the past year with talent, experience and hard work, Jackie has established herself in Austin ,Texas, a vibrant music town steeped in the blues and rock and roll.
In 2009 she toured Texas, Japan, and Australia, and is about to hit the road in New Zealand with a new CD “FREEDOM” released in 2010.
Bristow has opened shows for Madeleine Peyroux , Phoebe Snow, Jimmy Webb, Daniel Lanois, who said, from the stage, “she sings like a bird” Art Garfunkel, Renee Geyer and Mark Seymour. Since living in Austin, Jackie has been a regular performer at the One World Theatre where she has performed the pre-concert shows for Shawn Colvin, Ricky Skaggs, Rodney Crowell, Richie Havens. Jackie plays regularly at the legendary Cactus café opening for Austin’s own Bob Schneider.
Her songs have been used repeatedly in Australian and New Zealand film and television hit shows such as “The Secret Life Of Us,” “Home And Away”, “Outrageous Fortune,” “Shortland Street,” and “Go Big.” Her song “This is Australia” won Tourism Australia’s Song Competition and has been featured in a worldwide promotion campaign.
Barry Saunders
is well established as a leading solo musician, although immediately recognisable as front-man for The Warratahs. His forth, and most recent album ‘Red Morning’ has received considerable airplay and critical acclaim. Barry will be performing solo, as well as teaming up with other musicians for some rousing sets at this year’s festival.
The Saddle Hillbillies
is a popular bluegrass band which features notable ‘Chaps’ John Dodd and Hyram Ballard.
Entertainment coordinator Mike Hood agrees that while there something on the day’s music calendar for everyone, there is a distinct country and Celtic feel running throughout the repertoires that blends nicely with the ‘moonshine’ theme of the festival. Mike will join Nashville veteran Jeff Rea to coordinate the sound system and performance schedule for the event.
